Tree Trimming Advice

Pruning and Maintaining Trees

Despite the variety of tree types available, there are only a few principles you need to remember when caring for most of them. When you select a tree for your yard, make sure you know what kind of soil it prefers, how much sun it needs, and any special fertilizer requirements. Otherwise, mulching and pruning will help your tree thrive.

Remember that poor pruning can cause damage that lasts for the life of the tree and often times results in disease or death.

Always inspect your trees after a storm to see if there is damage or any pruning needed.  Damaged Trees can be deadly and can cause damage to your home and property.

Other tree trimming and removal tips include:

  • Don’t prune without a good reason.
  • Never remove more than 25 percent of foliage during a growing season.
  • Never prune within 10 feet of a utility line.  Call Blue Ridge Mountain Tree Service.  We’re licensed and insured pros and know how to deal with these situations.
  • Don’t prune a newly planted tree for the first year, except if removing damage or disease.
  • Don’t try to tackle a pruning job that requires a chain saw or ladder work – again, leave it to the pros at Blue Ridge Mountain Tree Service.
  • Never cut off the branch collar (don’t make a flush cut).
  • Do not climb the tree with climbing spikes as this can cause damage.  It should only be done by a professional.
